President Yoweri Museveni’s latest national address has sparked fresh debate after journalist Robert Kayongo questioned both the tone and delivery of the speech, suggesting it reflected deeper pressures within the country’s political and security landscape.

In his Saturday night address, Museveni focused on security, governance, and national stability, reiterating the government’s commitment to maintaining order amid ongoing political tensions.

He defended the state’s approach to law enforcement, arguing that peace and stability remain essential for citizens to fully enjoy their rights and freedoms.

The president also emphasized accountability among public officials, urging leaders to improve service delivery and warning against inefficiency in government systems.

His remarks come at a time of heightened scrutiny following recent political developments, including disputes linked to the electoral process and concerns raised by sections of the opposition.

However, it is the tone of the address that has drawn significant public attention.

Reacting to the speech, Kayongo offered a sharply critical assessment, describing the president’s demeanor as unusual compared to past addresses.

“I have never seen President Kaguta Museveni address the nation the way he did today. He looked unusually threatened especially by what appears to be growing pressure from within the military,” Kayongo said.

He added that the president appeared measured in his remarks, noting that “at times, it sounded as though he was carefully choosing what he could and couldn’t say rather than speaking freely.”

Kayongo further argued that the overall impression created by the speech raised questions about the current state of leadership.

“He came across as fearful, defensive and disconnected from what is really happening. This was one of his weakest public addresses in a long time. Whether intentionally or not, today’s speech gave the impression of a leader who may be losing control of the situation,” he stated.

The comments have intensified discussion around the address, with observers offering differing interpretations.

While some view Museveni’s remarks as a firm reaffirmation of state authority and stability, others see them as reflective of underlying tensions within the political environment.
