Uganda’s Minister of State for Local Government Balaam Ateenyi has launched a sharp rebuttal against The Economist after the publication described General Muhoozi Kainerugaba as a “despot in waiting,” calling the claim “reckless, baseless, and unfounded.”

In a statement that signals growing tension between sections of Uganda’s leadership and international media, Ateenyi dismissed the characterization as politically driven and lacking factual grounding.

“I strongly and unequivocally reject this reckless, baseless, and unfounded statement in the strongest terms possible,” he said, directly responding to the publication.

The minister argued that such labels distort public understanding and undermine meaningful political discourse.

“Describing General Muhoozi Kainerugaba as ‘a despot-in-waiting’ is, in my view, an unfair political characterization that is not supported by credible evidence,” Ateenyi added.

He warned that sensational framing by global media risks inflaming divisions rather than fostering informed debate.

“Public discourse should be anchored in facts, fairness, and responsible commentary—not sensational labels, speculation, or character attacks,” he stated.

Ateenyi’s remarks come at a time when General Muhoozi’s rising political visibility continues to draw both domestic attention and international scrutiny, particularly in the context of Uganda’s long-running leadership under President Yoweri Museveni.

However, the minister strongly defended Muhoozi’s record and leadership outlook, portraying him as a figure committed to national and continental ideals.

“General Muhoozi believes in democracy, Pan-Africanism, national stability as the foremost priority, transparency, and honest leadership. He is a patriot,” Ateenyi said.

He further dismissed The Economist’s interpretation as fundamentally flawed, insisting it fails to reflect Muhoozi’s actual principles and conduct.

“Your description and understanding of him are, in my opinion, totally wrong,” he added.
