Ssenyonyi Reacts as Arrest of 7 Parliament Officials Sparks Fresh Corruption Storm

Leader of Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi has issued a sharp response following the arrest of seven senior Parliament officials, raising concern over how critics of government are treated even as corruption cases continue to emerge.

Reacting to the high-profile arrests, the Nakawa West MP said it was “unfortunate that those who criticize and point out governance flaws are often viewed as the bad ones,” framing the developments within a broader pattern where whistleblowers and accountability voices face resistance.

The arrests, carried out by the Inspectorate of Government (IGG), target top parliamentary staff accused of embezzlement, causing financial loss, and money laundering.

Investigators say the case involves billions of Ugandan shillings allegedly mismanaged between 2023 and 2026, making it one of the most significant corruption probes within Parliament in recent years.

Ssenyonyi, who has consistently raised concerns over public expenditure, welcomed the crackdown but questioned its scope.

“We hope the IGG will follow up all the other corruption matters raised severally,” he said, pointing to unresolved allegations that have previously been flagged without visible action.

His remarks place renewed pressure on oversight institutions to demonstrate consistency in handling corruption cases, amid growing public scrutiny.

In recent months, opposition leaders and civil society actors have accused authorities of selective enforcement, arguing that some cases receive attention while others stall.
