Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa has welcomed the withdrawal of a parliamentary election petition in Kigulu North, describing the move as a demonstration of political maturity and party loyalty within the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).
In a statement, Tayebwa commended Ismail Badogi Waguma for voluntarily dropping his legal challenge against Kungu Samuel Bamuteeze, the Member of Parliament for Kigulu North Constituency in Iganga District.
“I sincerely appreciate my brother Hajji Ismail Badogi Waguma for voluntarily withdrawing his parliamentary election petition challenging Hon. Kungu Samuel Bamuteeze,” Tayebwa said.
He described the move as one that prioritises unity and stability in the region.
“His gracious and selfless act reflects a deep dedication to preserving unity within NRM and promoting the stability and progress of Kigulu North and the broader Busoga sub-region,” he added.
Badogi, who serves as the NRM treasurer for Iganga District, had filed the petition contesting Bamuteeze’s victory.
However, his decision to withdraw the case effectively ends the legal dispute, paving the way for political reconciliation among party members in the constituency.
Tayebwa said the move signals “remarkable statesmanship,” adding that it aligns with the NRM’s broader principles of cohesion and collective progress under President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
“By choosing to withdraw the petition, Hajji Badogi has shown remarkable statesmanship and a firm commitment to party solidarity,” Tayebwa noted.
The Deputy Speaker further urged other NRM politicians involved in election-related court battles to consider alternative mechanisms for resolving disputes.
“I encourage colleagues with electoral petitions, especially those of NRM, to talk and harmonize their issues outside court,” he said.
