Pressure is mounting on Uganda after the United Nations raised concern over a series of arrests, deportations, and media restrictions targeting opposition figures and journalists, intensifying scrutiny on the country’s human rights record.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres said he is closely following developments, citing reports of detention of political and civic actors, as well as cases where the whereabouts of some individuals remain unclear.

His statement comes amid the reported abduction of lawyer Erias Lukwago and the continued detention of opposition leader Kizza Besigye.

Guterres also weighed in on the deportation of Kenyan politician Martha Karua and the shutdown of media outlets linked to the Nation Media Group, developments that have triggered concern among regional and international observers.

“He notes with concern reports regarding the detention of political and civic actors, including cases in which the whereabouts of some individuals have not been clearly established,” the statement said.

He stressed that fundamental freedoms must be upheld, adding: “Freedom of expression, including the independence of the media, as well as the rights to liberty and security of person, are enshrined in Uganda’s Constitution and its international human rights obligations.”

The UN chief further urged restraint from all actors, calling for adherence to the rule of law at a time when tensions appear to be rising.

The developments have sparked reactions from legal experts and civil society groups, who are now demanding transparent investigations into alleged human rights violations.

Critics argue that the pattern of arrests, enforced disappearances, and media restrictions points to a broader clampdown on dissent.

However, Ugandan authorities have previously defended such actions, maintaining they are necessary to preserve national security and public order.
