National Unity Platform (NUP) Secretary General David Rubongoya has raised concern over the arrest and remand of 13 party supporters who were travelling from Kampala to Luwero for a birthday.

In a statement, Rubongoya claimed the supporters were intercepted on Saturday after police officers allegedly noticed that they were wearing NUP party colours and carrying a party flag.

According to the NUP official, the group was arrested and detained at Kawempe Police Station before being presented before a court at Kanyanya.

Rubongoya said the 13 were charged with being a nuisance and handling the national flag in what prosecutors described as a “careless and degrading way”.

He further alleged that the supporters were not allowed to make a bail application and were instead remanded until August 28.

“The regime always manufacturing cases to ensure a constant presence of political prisoners,” Rubongoya said, while condemning the continued detention of the party supporters.

The NUP secretary general identified those remanded as Muwonge Martin, Bwire Hakim, Sseremba Paul, Kawanda Ezra, Ssali Fred, Simon Geserwa, Kasule Godfrey, Nakitende Vivian, Waswa Mohammed, Nayebale Grace, Musisi Shafiq, Lubega Shakuru and Ssuuna Simon.

The allegations come amid continued tensions between Uganda’s opposition parties and security agencies over the treatment of political supporters and activities.
