Bobi Wine Accuses Anita Among of Blocking Rivals in Bukedea

National Unity Platform (NUP) president Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has launched a scathing attack on Speaker of Parliament Anita Among, accusing her of trying to block all challengers in the upcoming Bukedea by-election.

In a strongly worded statement, Bobi Wine claimed that three women who had expressed interest in contesting against Among, including NUP’s candidate Mercy Marion Alupo, have been disqualified under questionable circumstances.

According to the musician-turned-politician, court documents allege that “tribunals” ruled the three women are not registered voters in Bukedea District.

He described the move as a blatant attempt to ensure that the Speaker runs unopposed, just as she did in the last general election and in the ruling NRM primaries.

“Our candidate has never been invited by any tribunal for any hearing. She only learned about the so-called tribunal through court documents. This is another shameless abuse of authority, and the judiciary is now on trial to show whether it will protect justice or aid this injustice," Bobi Wine said.

The matter is reportedly set for hearing on Monday, raising tension in Bukedea where Among enjoys significant influence as a senior NRM figure.

Critics have often accused the Speaker of tightening her grip on Bukedea politics, with opposition voices complaining of intimidation, irregularities, and unfair disqualification of opponents.

NUP says it will stand by Alupo and fight what it calls “a plot to silence women challengers.”

Bobi Wine warned that the developments are not only about Bukedea but also about the integrity of Uganda’s electoral system ahead of 2026.

“This is not just about one seat. It is about whether Ugandans will ever have a fair election,” he said.
