The National Unity Platform (NUP) has accused police of deliberate obstruction and brutality as the party attempted to reach Busujju for a scheduled public engagement.
In a statement on X, the party claimed authorities tried to divert their convoy to a longer route via Kitalya, despite the destination being only minutes away.
“The intention was clear: to delay us using the usual tactics of making us travel unnecessarily long distances. Our people in Busujju deserved our presence within the scheduled timeline, and a strong statement was made despite these barriers,” the statement read.
The party expressed disappointment over what it described as “criminal” actions by the police, who reportedly attacked and arrested peaceful NUP supporters who had gathered along the route.
“It is unfortunate that the regime police cannot hide their appetite for brutality,” the statement added.
Eyewitnesses confirmed that several NUP supporters were detained during the incident.
Social media posts circulating shortly after the event showed tense scenes as police confronted individuals waving at the convoy.
For NUP, Busujju was intended to be a significant platform to connect with grassroots supporters, but the party’s leadership has vowed that such incidents will not deter their outreach efforts.
This incident follows a series of similar reports in which opposition rallies across the country have been disrupted.
NUP has consistently called for respect for citizens’ rights to peaceful assembly, warning that repeated police interventions risk escalating political tensions.
The party has pledged to continue engaging its supporters despite what it terms “deliberate harassment,” asserting that their message and presence in Busujju remains undiminished.
