NUP Holds Mubende Rally Despite Police Blockades

The National Unity Platform (NUP) on Monday defied heavy police restrictions to hold a rally in Mubende District, marking the latest stop in its ongoing mobilization tour.

In a statement shared on X, the party said it was forced to change its venue at the last minute after security officers blocked access to its planned rally site within Mubende Municipality.

“The revolutionary train finally sealed the day with a rally in Mubende despite the numerous barricades that we encountered along the way,” NUP said.

According to the statement, the party team was turned away from its original meeting point by police, prompting them to relocate to a more remote area outside the municipality.

Despite the disruptions, NUP described the rally as a success, praising residents for turning up in large numbers to “support our protest vote cause.”

The opposition party, led by Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has accused security agencies of systematically blocking its activities across the country.

In recent weeks, several of its planned meetings in Masaka, Fort Portal, and Hoima were either cancelled or moved after police cited security concerns.

Police have repeatedly maintained that NUP’s activities breach public order guidelines, a claim the party dismisses as politically motivated.

Observers say the growing confrontation between NUP and the authorities signals renewed political tension ahead of the 2026 general elections.

Kyagulanyi has been using the nationwide tours to mobilize support and rally citizens against what he calls “a dictatorship maintained through repression.”

Despite the setbacks, NUP vowed to continue its outreach campaign, insisting that Ugandans have a right to assemble and express themselves freely.

“We are grateful to the people of Mubende for standing firm in the face of intimidation.”
