Parliament Speaker Anita Among has praised Uganda’s progress under the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), describing the country’s 63-year post-independence journey as one of resilience and steady growth.

In a message shared on X on Wednesday, Among reflected on Uganda’s transformation since gaining independence in 1962, noting that the nation had overcome immense challenges to achieve peace and development.

“Uganda's journey over the past 63 years has been marked by numerous challenges, transformations, and steady progress. Under the NRM government, we have experienced peace, stability, and inclusive development. I commend all those whose efforts have made this possible. Happy Independence Day to all my fellow countrymen and women!” she wrote.

Among’s remarks echoed the broader message of unity and continuity often emphasized by government leaders during national celebrations.

Her statement comes as Ugandans across the country commemorate Independence Day with official events led by President Yoweri Museveni in the northern district of Kitgum.

The Speaker’s comments are likely to resonate with supporters of the ruling party, who credit the NRM for maintaining peace and advancing infrastructure and social programs over the past three decades.

However, the statement may also draw scrutiny from opposition voices who argue that the country’s democratic progress and inclusivity remain incomplete.

Among called on Ugandans to celebrate the milestone with pride and a renewed sense of patriotism, saying the nation’s journey “continues to be written by the collective efforts of its people.”
