Makindye East Member of Parliament Nyeko Derrick has shared a powerful message marking Uganda’s 63rd Independence Day, calling for citizens to take charge of shaping the nation’s future.

In a statement posted on X, the opposition legislator described what he termed “The New Ugandan" is a citizen who is no longer waiting for promises from leaders but is instead determined to drive change personally.

“The New Ugandan at 63 is awake, wiser, braver, and tired of lies dressed as leadership. He has seen promises fade, dreams delayed, and voices silenced, yet his hope refuses to die,” Nyeko wrote.

The youthful MP reflected on Uganda’s post-independence journey, noting that while the country has endured years of political manipulation and unfulfilled pledges, a new generation of citizens is rising with renewed courage and self-belief.

“The Ugandan at 63 no longer waits for change — he becomes the change. He speaks truth, he serves, he believes again in the power of his own hands,” he added.

Nyeko emphasized that real transformation would not come from those in power but from ordinary citizens who choose to act, serve, and demand accountability.

“For the Uganda we want will not come from above; it will rise from among us — the people,” he declared, concluding his message with a wish for a future built on truth, unity, and courage.

Uganda marked its 63rd Independence anniversary on October 9, 2025, amid growing calls for political reform and greater civic participation.
