Activist Anthony Natif has criticized the Uganda Electoral Commission (@UgandaEC) for poor planning and execution following reports of voting machine failures during recent elections.

Natif, however, clarified that the issue was not with the BVVK machines themselves.

In a post on X, Natif highlighted that several districts, including Nebbi, Bukwo, Namisindwa, Kapchorwa, Bulambuli, Katakwi, Bugweri, Sironko, Lwengo, Sheema, and Ibanda, experienced no technical failures.

He emphasized that staff in these areas were well-trained and codes for the machines were transmitted on time, suggesting that the technology performed as intended where proper preparations were made.

“The machines worked just fine in districts where the Electoral Commission prepared adequately. The problem lies in poor planning, recruitment, training, and rollout in other areas,” Natif wrote.

The activist expressed concern over whether the commission would address these shortcomings ahead of upcoming local council elections, including mayoral contests.

While acknowledging that the commission still has time to rectify operational gaps, Natif urged immediate improvements to prevent similar disruptions in future polls.

Electoral stakeholders have repeatedly highlighted the importance of thorough staff training and logistical readiness for successful electronic voting.

Natif’s observations point to uneven implementation, which risks undermining public confidence in the voting process.
