Human rights activist Agather Atuhaire has raised serious concerns over the health of former presidential candidate Dr. Kizza Besigye, accusing the government of deliberate neglect that endangers his life.
Speaking on X, Atuhaire recalled that in February last year, Besigye was brought to a civilian court in a frail state.
High Court Judge Douglas Singiza reportedly deemed him too ill to attend and ordered him returned to prison while proceedings continued in his absence.
Atuhaire contrasted that situation with the current state, saying: “Today, almost a year later, Besigye is too ill to be brought to court but okay to remain in prison!”
Atuhaire described this as a “gradual hanging” by the government and expressed frustration over what she called the widespread silence from key institutions.
“The politicians are quiet! The church is quiet! The civil society is quiet with a few just lamenting. The lawyers’ association is quiet. The doctors’ association is quiet! We’re so doomed as a country it’s so sad!” she wrote.
The activist’s remarks highlight ongoing concerns about the treatment of opposition figures in Uganda and the adequacy of medical care provided to inmates with chronic illnesses.
