Uganda’s Parliament has begun the vetting process for Justice Dr. Flavian Zeija, who has been recommended by President for appointment as the country’s next Chief Justice.

Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa confirmed on X that he attended the parliamentary session convened by the Appointments Committee, chaired by Anita Among, to assess Justice Zeija’s suitability for the top judicial post.

“This morning, I joined Parliament’s Appointments Committee as we sat to vet Hon. Justice Dr. Flavian Zeija, who has been recommended by His Excellency the President to serve as the next Chief Justice,” Tayebwa wrote.

He added that the committee will forward its recommendations to the President, who will make the final appointment.

Justice Zeija, a seasoned jurist, has served in various judicial capacities, earning recognition for his work in commercial and constitutional law.

His nomination comes at a time when the judiciary faces increasing scrutiny over transparency and efficiency in handling high-profile cases.

The parliamentary vetting process involves a comprehensive review of the nominee’s professional record, ethical conduct, and vision for the judiciary.

Members of the Appointments Committee are expected to question Justice Zeija on issues ranging from judicial reforms to strengthening public confidence in the legal system.

Tayebwa congratulated Justice Zeija for being considered for the appointment, noting that the nomination reflects the President’s confidence in his abilities.

The committee is expected to complete its review and submit its recommendations to the President within the coming weeks, paving the way for Justice Zeija to assume office as Uganda’s Chief Justice, pending the final approval.
