National Unity Platform (NUP) Secretary General David Rubongoya has expressed concern over the detention of party members ahead of the upcoming #ProtestVote2026 activities.
Speaking after visiting Wandegeya Police Station, Rubongoya revealed that NUP supporter Mukiibi Denis was interrogated over allegations of “unlawful drilling” and may be linked to a broader case involving other party activists.
According to Rubongoya, Denis could be added to an ongoing file that includes prominent NUP figures such as Waiswa, Eddie Mutwe, Achileo, Bobi Giant, Kaija, and Sauda.
He described the arrests as politically motivated, aimed at preventing NUP leaders and members from participating in planned activities tied to the #ProtestVote2026 campaign.
“This is a clear attempt to intimidate our members and restrict political participation ahead of the forthcoming events,” Rubongoya said.
He emphasized that despite these challenges, NUP remains committed to mobilizing supporters and standing firm in the pursuit of democratic participation.
“We shall overcome,” he affirmed, calling on party supporters to remain vigilant and continue engaging peacefully.
NUP leaders have warned that these moves risk escalating tensions between law enforcement and political activists.
Rubongoya’s visit to the police station underscores the party’s active monitoring of the situation and its determination to defend members’ rights.
The NUP has vowed to continue its advocacy while ensuring that its supporters remain safe and informed as political activities intensify across Kampala and other major urban centers.
