The Uganda Electoral Commission (EC) on Monday hosted a delegation from the Joint African Union (AU), COMESA, and IGAD Election Observation Mission ahead of the country’s 2026 General Elections.
The mission, led by former Nigerian President H.E. Goodluck Jonathan, was briefed on the Commission’s preparations and electoral roadmap.
During the meeting, the EC outlined ongoing efforts to ensure a transparent, credible, and peaceful election. Key discussion points included voter registration updates, logistical arrangements, and measures aimed at preventing electoral malpractice.
The Commission emphasized its commitment to adhering to both regional and international best practices throughout the electoral process.
H.E. Goodluck Jonathan, leading the observer delegation, expressed appreciation for the detailed briefing, noting that early engagement with election management bodies is critical for credible monitoring.
He highlighted that observer missions play a key role in reinforcing public confidence and ensuring adherence to democratic principles.
The EC’s engagement with regional bodies underscores Uganda’s effort to maintain electoral integrity and promote peace amid rising political interest in the 2026 polls.
The Electoral Commission reiterated its stance that a free and fair election is a shared responsibility, involving authorities, political actors, and citizens alike.
With the 2026 General Elections drawing closer, these regional observation efforts are expected to contribute to transparency and reinforce public trust in Uganda’s democratic institutions.
