UNAIDs Executive Director Winnie Byanyima, has expressed deep concern over reports that some young Ugandans are being recruited by Russia to fight as mercenaries in the ongoing war in Ukraine.
In a statement, Byanyima described the situation as both “saddening and alarming,” noting that poverty and a lack of opportunities have driven many youths to take up what he called a “dangerous and dehumanising gamble.”
He urged the government to intervene and ensure the safety of the country’s young men.
“Our sons are being exploited in a foreign war, risking their lives for interests that are not theirs. The NRM government must act urgently to bring them back home,” Byanyima said.
He further appealed to the youths themselves to stay safe and avoid engaging in such high-risk activities.
The recruitment of foreign fighters in the Ukraine conflict has drawn international attention, with human rights groups warning about the physical and psychological toll on young combatants.
Byanyima’s remarks reveal growing concerns over the welfare of Ugandan youths abroad and the responsibilities of the government to protect its citizens.
