Long-serving Commissioner General of Prisons, Johnson Byabashaija, is set to retire after President Yoweri Museveni reportedly approved his exit, according to claims circulating on social media and prison sources.

A statement shared by blogger Ritah Kaggwa indicates that the President, who is also commander-in-chief of the armed forces, has endorsed the move as part of a broader plan to restructure leadership within the Uganda Prisons Service.

Sources cited in the update suggest that authorities are considering appointing a more experienced military figure to take over the role.

The reports further allege that the prisons system is currently under the influence of the Special Forces Command (SFC), prompting the push for leadership changes.

However, there has been no official confirmation from State House or the Uganda Prisons Service regarding these claims.

Byabashaija, who has served in the position for over a decade, has previously faced international scrutiny, including sanctions from Western countries over alleged human rights violations.

Despite this, he remains one of the most prominent figures in Uganda’s security structure.

According to the update, the outgoing prisons chief plans to focus on humanitarian and personal ventures during retirement. These include church-related work in Kigezi North Diocese and managing private business interests.

Meanwhile, his deputy, Samuel Akena, has emerged as a possible successor, having recently been reappointed. Observers say his appointment could ensure continuity within the institution if confirmed.
