The Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba has announced that more than Sh1 billion Uganda shillings was raised during his annual birthday run held over the weekend in Kampala.
Taking to his official X account, Muhoozi thanked participants and supporters, confirming that the funds collected will be channelled to selected charitable causes in the coming weeks.
“I’m happy to announce that we raised over 1 billion Uganda shillings during the birthday run. I shall soon announce the charities we shall support and handover cheques to them. Thank you all for your support,” he wrote.
The event, held at Kololo Independence Grounds, attracted tens of thousands of participants, including government officials, security personnel, youth groups, and private sector sponsors.
It has grown into one of the most high-profile annual gatherings linked to Muhoozi, combining fitness, fundraising, and public mobilisation under the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU).
Muhoozi also revealed that part of the funds raised will go toward supporting a child-focused health initiative after receiving a proposal from political commentator Andrew Mwenda.
“Comrade Andrew Mwenda has told me about a foundation called the Uganda Child Cancer Foundation that is fundraising to build a hostel. Part of the money raised will go to them,” he added.
The Uganda Child Cancer Foundation is involved in supporting children undergoing cancer treatment and their families, including efforts to establish accommodation facilities for patients receiving long-term care.
This year’s edition of the birthday run was held under the theme “Run for Charity, Run for Hope,” with organisers focusing on raising funds for vulnerable children in baby homes and related welfare programmes.
The strong turnout and fundraising performance once again highlighted the growing scale of the annual event, which continues to draw participation from different sectors, including political leaders, business figures, and state institutions.
In previous editions, the run has also attracted significant sponsorship from private sector players and public institutions, contributing to its expanding profile as a national charity and social mobilisation platform.
Muhoozi is expected to release a full list of beneficiary organisations in the coming days, followed by formal cheque handover ceremonies for the selected charities.
The announcement adds to the increasing visibility of the event within Uganda’s public calendar, where it now sits at the intersection of charity work, leadership branding, and civic engagement.
