Makerere University students headed to the polls on Thursday, April 9, for the 92nd Guild elections, with former Guild President Ssentamu Churchill sending a strong message encouraging active participation.
Churchill, who recently completed his term, emphasized the importance of electing leaders who prioritize the welfare of students over personal gain.
“As Guild President Emeritus, I urge my fellow Makerereans: Turn up today and vote actively in the 92nd Guild elections. Choose leaders with integrity, vision and real commitment to students — not personal gain. Your vote shapes the Guild’s future and our university’s direction. Let’s elect servant leaders who will truly serve and uplift every student. Build a stronger, united Makerere!” Churchill stated in a message circulated to the university community.
Churchill, whose tenure ended on March 10, also used his farewell address to reflect on his time in office, expressing gratitude to students, university administrators, and his cabinet.
“Presidential Term officially done. Big thanks to every Makerere student who trusted me, the administration that supported us, and my unstoppable cabinet. Above all, I appreciate the Lord that has given me the ability to execute all my duties diligently. We didn’t just mark time, we made a difference and for now, goodbye. God bless you and God bless Makerere. We build for the future. Endorsed by God,” he wrote.
During his term, Churchill focused on fostering unity among students and enhancing campus programs. His administration championed initiatives aimed at improving student welfare, transparency in governance, and engagement in academic and extracurricular activities.
His outgoing message underscored a legacy of service-oriented leadership, urging the new student body to continue building on these foundations.
