Debates around fatherhood, responsibility, and family trust continue to dominate public discourse across East Africa, reflecting changing social dynamics in relationships and parenting.

In Uganda, as in other countries in the region, discussions on what truly defines a father have increasingly moved from private spaces to public conversations, especially with the rise of DNA testing and openness about family matters.

Against this backdrop, a vocal Member of Parliament has publicly shared details of a DNA test that, according to him, confirmed he is not the biological father of a child he had been supporting.

In a statement that has drawn wide attention online, Peter Salasya, a first time MP for Mumias East Constituency in Kenya said the outcome of the test did not change his commitment to parenting responsibilities, urging fathers facing similar situations not to withdraw support from children.

“To the mothers of my children, regardless of the outcome of any DNA test, I remain committed to supporting and caring for the children, as my dedication to their well-being is unwavering,” he said.

The legislator emphasized that fatherhood should not be defined only by biological connection, but also by responsibility, emotional presence, and consistent support in a child’s life.

“I also encourage fellow fathers who may face challenging DNA results not to withdraw their support. Providing care and guidance to a child is a meaningful responsibility and a privilege, particularly where there is mutual respect and cooperation with the mother,” he added.

His remarks come at a time when paternity-related disputes and DNA testing are becoming more common in Kenya and are also slowly gaining attention in Uganda, where family courts and social conversations continue to grapple with questions of responsibility, child welfare, and parental rights.

While Salasya did not provide further details about the circumstances surrounding the DNA test, his comments have sparked mixed reactions online, with some praising his stand on responsibility and others raising concerns about the emotional and legal complexities such cases create.

The outspoken legislator, known for his strong social media presence, has previously attracted attention for his direct views on relationships, youth issues, and family life.
