The Ugandan government has announced plans to accord an official burial to former minister and Supreme Court judge Augustine Nshimye Sebuturo following his death, in recognition of his long public service.
In a statement released on behalf of the presidency, Millet Babalanda confirmed that Yoweri Museveni had sanctioned the state-led sendoff for the late jurist, who also previously served as a legislator for Mityana South.
“Dear friends, I wish to inform you all that the President… has granted an official burial to the fallen former Minister, Justice of the Supreme Court and legislator… Hon. Justice Augustine Nshimye Sebuturo,” Babalanda stated.
She further revealed that the National Organising Committee (N.O.C) had commenced consultations with the family of the deceased to plan a “befitting sendoff,” with the burial date yet to be announced.
Justice Sebuturo was widely regarded as a seasoned legal mind, having served at the highest levels of Uganda’s judiciary.
His career also extended into politics, where he represented Mityana South constituency, contributing to legislative processes and governance.
Government officials described the decision to grant an official burial as a mark of honour for his contribution to public service across the judiciary and executive arms of government.
Babalanda extended condolences to the bereaved family, friends, and constituents of Mityana South, as well as the wider Ugandan public.
“Condolences to the family, friends, the people of Mityana and Ugandans at large. May Hon. Justice Nshimye’s soul rest in eternal peace,” she added.
The passing of Justice Sebuturo marks the loss of a prominent figure in Uganda’s legal and political landscape, with leaders expected to pay tribute during the upcoming state-supported funeral arrangements.
Further details regarding the burial programme are expected to be communicated once consultations with the family are concluded.
