Kikube District has been plunged into grief following the sudden death of its Chairman, Banura Kyaligonza, who was killed in a road accident along the Kikube–Hoima road.

The fatal incident was confirmed by State Minister for Youth and Children Affairs Balaam Ateenyi, who described the loss as a major blow to both the Bunyoro sub-region and Uganda at large.

According to the minister, Kyaligonza died after being struck by a commuter taxi, commonly referred to as a “drone.”

The accident has renewed public concern over road safety, particularly on busy regional roads where such incidents remain frequent.

Kyaligonza, who was serving as Kikube District Chairman and had already secured another term as chairman-elect, was widely regarded as a rising political figure.

His leadership in the district had earned him local support, with many viewing him as a key figure in advancing development and governance in the area.

He was the son of Uganda’s Ambassador to Burundi, Matia Kyaligonza, a senior military figure and diplomat.

His family background, coupled with his growing political profile, positioned him among emerging leaders in the country.

In addition to his district role, Kyaligonza was an active member of the Patriotic League of Uganda, a political movement linked to Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

His involvement reflected his engagement in national political structures beyond local administration.

Minister Ateenyi conveyed condolences to the bereaved family, the Obukama bwa Bunyoro Kitara, and the wider Ugandan community, describing the deceased as a committed and patriotic leader.

He also called on motorists to exercise greater caution on the roads to help prevent similar tragedies. Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident.
