National Unity Platform (NUP) Secretary General David Rubongoya visited deputy party spokesperson Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro at Luzira Upper Prison on Wednesday, offering support following the death of his wife after a prolonged battle with cancer.
Rubongoya said he, alongside Mufumbiro’s twin brother and other party colleagues, sought to comfort him in what he described as a “deeply sad situation.”
Mufumbiro reportedly learned of his wife’s passing from fellow inmates who had heard the news on the radio, leaving him devastated.
“His greatest regret is that he could not be by her side as she took her last breath,” Rubongoya said. He added that Mufumbiro hopes to secure bail to lay his wife to rest.
The NUP secretary general also highlighted Mufumbiro’s anguish over the circumstances of his detention.
“What pains him most is that on the day authorities claim he participated in ‘unlawful drilling,’ he was at Uganda Cancer Institute, desperately seeking medical attention for his wife. The price of freedom is steep,” Rubongoya said.
Mufumbiro has been detained over allegations of involvement in unlawful drilling, charges the party and his supporters argue are politically motivated.
Rubongoya urged the public to keep him in their prayers, emphasizing the human cost of political activism in Uganda.
