Edith Katende Mufumbiro, wife of National Unity Platform (NUP) Deputy Spokesperson Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, has passed away after a prolonged battle with cancer, prompting calls for compassion from prominent Ugandan officials.
Principal Road Safety Officer Ronald Amanyire expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, emphasizing that some moments rise above politics.
In a heartfelt statement, he said: “I have spent the whole morning reflecting on this situation, choosing my words carefully because I do not want to be misunderstood. I will leave the rest to God. There are moments in every country that rise above politics, and this is one of them.”
Amanyire described the death as a reminder that humanity must guide decisions, especially when loved ones face life‑threatening illness.
“At the heart of it all is a simple truth: humanity must prevail. When someone’s spouse is fighting a life‑threatening illness like cancer, compassion should guide every decision,” he said.
Edith Mufumbiro passed away early Wednesday at the Mulago Cancer Institute in Kampala, where she had been receiving treatment.
Her death has drawn national attention not only for the personal loss but also because her husband was detained at Luzira Upper Prison at the time, unable to be by her side.
NUP leaders have highlighted that Mufumbiro’s repeated bail applications to attend to his wife’s care were denied, adding to the family’s grief.
Reflecting on the wider human cost, Amanyire said: “I cannot begin to imagine what the children, relatives, and friends are going through right now while carrying grief that arrived too soon and under circumstances no family should ever face.”
He concluded with a prayer for the bereaved: “May Mrs. Mufumbiro rest in peace. May her loved ones find strength. And may we never lose sight of the human beings behind every headline and every story.”
