Police Officer Shoots Female Motorist Near Speaker Anita Among’s Residence in Kampala

A female motorist was shot and injured by a police officer on Thursday near the residence of Speaker of Parliament Anita Among in Kampala, in an incident that has triggered an official investigation.


The shooting occurred around midday along Mackinnon Road, where the woman, whose identity has not yet been established, was reportedly driving a Toyota Harrier, registration number UBQ 038A, close to the high-security area hosting the Speaker’s residence. 


Sources familiar with the incident said the shooting happened under unclear circumstances, with the officer discharging a firearm and injuring the driver. 


The exact events leading up to the shooting remain under investigation.


Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Ms Racheal Kawala, confirmed the incident, stating that a woman was shot by a police officer but noting that details are still limited.


“It is true there was a shooting. She was driving a Toyota Harrier UBQ 038A. She was shot by a police officer. I don’t have all the details of the incident right now,” Ms Kawala said.


She added that police have commenced internal inquiries and will question the officer involved to establish what transpired.


“We will interrogate our officer and also investigate the circumstances of the shooting,” she said.


The condition of the victim has not been officially disclosed, and authorities have not indicated whether the shooting was accidental, defensive, or linked to a security concern.


The area around Mackinnon Road is known for heightened security due to the presence of senior government officials, including the Speaker of Parliament.


Police investigations are ongoing as officials seek to establish the identity of the woman and the full circumstances surrounding the shooting.
