Questions Raised Over Surgical Safety Following Death of MP Helen Nakimuli

The death of Ugandan Member of Parliament Helen Nakimuli has sparked renewed scrutiny over surgical safety standards, with a road safety officer in the Ministry of Works and Transport calling for urgent attention to anaesthesiology services in the country.

Speaking in the wake of the legislator’s passing, Ronald, a road safety officer, questioned the circumstances surrounding the procedure that reportedly preceded her death.

According to accounts shared by the MP’s personal assistant, the surgery had been declared successful, but her condition deteriorated shortly after, with medical teams unable to resuscitate her.

Ronald pointed to what he described as a critical but often overlooked area in Uganda’s healthcare system — anaesthesiology.

He argued that while surgical teams may complete procedures successfully, complications related to anesthesia can prove fatal if not properly managed.

Drawing from personal experience, he claimed that cases where patients fail to regain consciousness after surgery may be linked to anesthesia-related complications, including possible overdose or mismanagement.

However, he clarified that he is not a medical professional.

The officer further raised concerns over the staffing and training of anesthesia providers, noting that Uganda continues to rely heavily on anaesthetists with diploma-level qualifications due to a shortage of fully trained specialists.

He warned that such gaps could expose patients to higher risks, particularly in complex procedures.

He added that any official report attributing the cause of death to anesthesia complications would have far-reaching implications for medical facilities across the country, especially those operating without specialist anaesthesiologists.

The remarks come amid broader concerns about healthcare capacity in Uganda, where limited resources and personnel shortages continue to challenge service delivery. Authorities are yet to release an official medical report detailing the exact cause of Nakimuli’s death.
