The National Unity Platform (NUP) Secretary General David Rubongoya has described the past few months as extremely difficult for the party and its president Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, citing a series of incidents he attributes to state-linked repression.

In a statement reflecting on the opposition’s recent experiences, Rubongoya said the party leadership has been under sustained pressure following what he termed a “rigged election” and a wider crackdown on its members.

“These months have been very difficult for all of us, but even much more difficult for our President,” Rubongoya stated.

He alleged that several NUP supporters have been abducted, tortured, and in some cases sexually violated, claims that have not been independently verified by authorities.

He further claimed that two of Bobi Wine’s deputy presidents were among those allegedly abducted, while a third was arrested and charged with terrorism-related offences.

According to him, these developments have significantly weakened the party’s internal leadership structure during a politically sensitive period.

Rubongoya also alleged repeated attacks on Bobi Wine’s home, including incidents he described as military raids that forced the opposition leader to flee for safety.

He said the residence was later attacked again, resulting in alleged assault on his wife, vandalism of property, and theft of household items.

The NUP secretary general additionally referenced the deaths of party-associated figures Edith Mufumbiro and Kalangala Woman MP Hellen Nakimuli, saying the circumstances surrounding their passing have added to the party’s distress.

Nakimuli, however, has been reported elsewhere to have died following medical complications.

Rubongoya said the cumulative events have made it difficult for Bobi Wine to publicly mourn colleagues, arguing that security constraints have restricted his movements.

He concluded by calling for prayers and solidarity for the party leadership, saying the continued pressure on NUP reflects what he described as an ongoing political crackdown linked to its opposition activities against the current administration.
