Parliament has been thrown into mourning following the death of Kalangala District Woman Member of Parliament and Shadow Minister for Information, Hon. Hellen Nakimuli, who passed away on Sunday, April 19, 2026.

Speaker of Parliament Anita Among formally announced the news in the House, describing the development as a deep shock to the institution and the country.

“Honourable colleagues, it is with great sorrow that I announce the passing of our esteemed colleague, the Woman Member of Parliament for Kalangala and Shadow Minister for Information, Hon. Hellen Nakimuli,” Speaker Among said.

“Words are insufficient to convey the shock we are experiencing at this moment, and we pray that the Lord Almighty sustains her family, friends, and all of us during this challenging time.”

Nakimuli’s death was confirmed shortly after reports emerged that she had undergone a medical procedure earlier in the day.

Parliamentary sources indicated that she had been active in coordinating opposition parliamentary business before her condition deteriorated.

She is reported to have died following complications linked to surgery, although official medical details have not yet been released.

The announcement triggered immediate mourning within Parliament, with legislators describing her as a committed representative who played an active role in opposition leadership and legislative debates.

As Shadow Minister for Information, she was involved in scrutinising government communication and advocating for greater transparency in public affairs.

Nakimuli represented Kalangala District, an island constituency in Lake Victoria, where she was known for raising concerns over service delivery challenges, including health access, transport, and education.

Her death has also been confirmed by the National Unity Platform (NUP), which described her passing as sudden and painful for the party and the broader opposition fraternity.

Further details, including funeral arrangements and an official medical report, are expected to be communicated by the family and Parliament in due course.
