Mulago National Referral Hospital has issued a clarification regarding reports circulating on the death of Kalangala District Woman Member of Parliament Helen Nakimuli, dismissing claims that she died at the facility.

In a statement addressing earlier media reports by NTV Uganda and the Daily Monitor, the hospital clarified that Nakimuli did not pass away at Mulago as had been widely reported.

Instead, it stated that she died at Alexandro Medical Centre, where she had been undergoing a surgical procedure.

According to the clarification, the legislator was taken to the private facility for surgery but succumbed while still under care at the same hospital.

Her body was later transferred to Mulago National Referral Hospital mortuary strictly for postmortem examination.

“The Woman Member of Parliament for Kalangala did not pass on at Mulago National Referral Hospital as earlier reported. Hon. Nakimuli Hellen died at Alexandro Medical Centre where she had gone for surgery and was subsequently transferred to Mulago Referral mortuary for postmortem,” the statement read in part.

The hospital further urged media houses and the public to rely on verified medical and official sources when reporting sensitive matters involving patient deaths, warning that premature or inaccurate information risks misleading the public and causing unnecessary distress to families.

The clarification comes amid widespread attention on Nakimuli’s sudden death, which has drawn tributes from political leaders, colleagues in Parliament, and constituents in Kalangala District.

She had served as Woman MP since 2021 and was recently re-elected, with a political focus on healthcare access, education, and improving livelihoods in island communities.

Authorities have indicated that postmortem findings will help establish the exact medical cause of death as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the surgery continue.
