Parliament Speaker Anita Among has issued a statement mourning the death of Hon. Araali Peter Banura, the Kikuube District LC5 chairperson, who was killed in a road accident on Saturday evening, April 4, 2026.
“It is with profound sadness and heartache that I received the news of the passing of Hon. Araali Peter Banura, a young, inspiring, and dedicated leader whom many of us relied on for guidance not only in Kikuube but across the Bunyoro subregion,” Among said.
Banura, described by Among as a keen mobilizer committed to improving the lives of his people, was struck by a speeding taxi along the Hoima–Fort Portal road in Butiamba locality as he interacted with residents after returning from his farm.
He was rushed to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital but pronounced dead on arrival. Three other people also died in the crash, and several were injured.
Among extended her condolences to Banura’s family, including his father, retired Maj Gen. Matayo Kyaligonza, and the people of Kikuube and the wider Bunyoro region.
“My deepest sympathies go out to our elder Maj Gen. Matayo Kyaligonza, the bereaved family, the people of Kikuube and Bunyoro, and all who knew him. May God comfort us all and grant his soul eternal peace,” she said.
Police have labeled the incident a hit‑and‑run, with the taxi driver fleeing the scene. Authorities later recovered the vehicle and are pursuing those responsible as investigations continue.
Banura, recently re‑elected for a second term, was widely respected for his community engagement and leadership, making his sudden death a significant loss to the district and region.
