Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, has held talks with her South Sudan counterpart, Rt Hon. Joseph Ngere Paciko, in a meeting focused on strengthening parliamentary cooperation and advancing regional integration within the East African Community (EAC).
In a statement shared after the meeting, Among said she hosted Paciko at her residence, where the two leaders discussed ways to deepen collaboration between their respective legislatures.
The engagement comes at a time when East African states are under increasing pressure to fast-track political and economic integration.
“Earlier today, I had the honour of hosting my esteemed counterpart from South Sudan… We engaged in productive discussions on enhancing collaboration between our respective Parliaments and promoting regional cooperation,” Among stated.
The talks are understood to have centered on legislative diplomacy, a growing pillar in regional relations, where parliaments play a more active role in shaping cross-border policy frameworks.
Key areas likely discussed include harmonisation of laws, oversight on regional agreements, and fostering people-to-people connections across member states.
South Sudan, the youngest member of the EAC, has been working to align its legal and institutional frameworks with those of the bloc.
Engagements such as this are seen as critical in accelerating its integration into the regional system, particularly in trade, infrastructure, and governance.
