Speaker of Parliament, Anita Annet Among, has announced that she will not contest the Speakership of the 12th Parliament, bringing an end to weeks of speculation marked by internal party consultations, reported political pressure, and ongoing corruption investigations.
In a statement posted on social media on Sunday night, Among said her decision followed “wide consultations and deep introspection” aimed at maintaining unity within the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).
“I will not be offering myself for the Speakership race of the 12th Parliament,” she stated, adding that the move was intended to preserve “harmony and clarity” within the party.
Her announcement comes after reports of heightened political pressure within the ruling establishment. Sources indicate that she met President Yoweri Museveni last Thursday, where she was reportedly advised to step aside from the race. State House has not commented on the reported meeting.
During the weekend, security agencies also carried out searches at several of her residences as part of ongoing corruption investigations. Authorities have not released detailed findings, but the operations have drawn public attention to the leadership transition in Parliament.
In her statement, Among did not directly address the reported pressure or the security raids. Instead, she focused on appreciation for the party and leadership that supported her rise.
“I am greatly indebted to H.E @KagutaMuseveni, my party, the @NRMOnline, and members of the 11th Parliament for giving me the opportunity to serve as Deputy Speaker and Speaker,” she said.
She also thanked her family and supporters for what she described as years of solidarity during her tenure in Parliament.
Among further pledged support for candidates who will be endorsed by the President and the NRM, urging Members of Parliament in the 12th Parliament to align with the party position once nominations are made.
“I pledge my total support to the candidates who will be endorsed by the President and the Party, and I implore all colleague MPs of the 12th Parliament to do the same,” she said.
She added that she remains open to continued public service if assigned by the party leadership or the President.
“I shall remain available to the service of my country as the party and the President may assign me,” she stated.
The Speaker also confirmed her willingness to cooperate with ongoing investigations, saying she will continue engaging with relevant state organs as they pursue the allegations raised.
