Political debate has taken a new turn after blogger Frank Mwesigye raised fresh allegations of misuse of public funds, shifting focus beyond the ongoing corruption investigations involving Speaker Anita Among.

His remarks introduce new scrutiny over government-linked promotional activities tied to the country’s coffee sector.

In a statement, Mwesigye questioned the rationale behind a reported plan by the CEO of Inspire Africa Nelson Tugume to host American singer and actor Tyrese Gibson in Uganda on October 3, 2026.

The visit, he claimed, is projected to cost up to $1 million (approximately Sh130 million), raising concerns over public expenditure and value for money.

“It seems our attention has been heavily focused on Rt. Hon. Anita Among while ignoring other serious cases of mismanagement of public funds,” Mwesigye said.

He argued that the cost of the planned event exceeds spending on high-end luxury items such as a Rolls-Royce, raising questions about priorities in public spending.

Mwesigye cast doubt on the effectiveness of involving foreign celebrities in promoting Ugandan coffee, a key export crop.

“How exactly does this faded singer and actor promote our coffee?” he posed, further questioning how many Ugandans are familiar with Tyrese Gibson’s work.

The blogger instead called for increased investment in local talent, saying Ugandan artists could serve as more relevant and cost-effective ambassadors for national products.

He argued that supporting local creatives would promote coffee while strengthening the domestic entertainment industry.

His remarks also called for investigations into what he described as “coffee marathon activities,” warning that significant public funds may be lost in initiatives that deliver little benefit to ordinary citizens.

The claims come at a time when public scrutiny over accountability and transparency in government spending remains high, particularly following recent corruption allegations involving senior officials.
