Burundi President Evariste Ndayishimiye has congratulated Uganda following the appointment of Ambassador Adonia Ayebare as the country’s new Minister for Foreign Affairs, praising his longstanding contribution to regional diplomacy and peace efforts in the Great Lakes region.

In a message shared after President Yoweri Museveni named Ayebare to the senior cabinet post, Ndayishimiye said he was delighted by the decision, noting that the seasoned diplomat is well known in Burundi for his role in supporting the country’s peace process.

“I am delighted by the appointment of Amb Adonia Ayebare to the post of Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uganda by HE Yoweri K. Museveni. Well known figure to the people of Burundi, his vital contribution as special envoy to our peace process remains etched in our memories.”

Ayebare, who has served in various diplomatic capacities including Uganda’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, has been a key figure in mediation efforts in Burundi, where he acted as a special envoy during critical phases of the peace process.

His work, according to Ndayishimiye, remains deeply appreciated in Bujumbura.

The appointment is expected to strengthen Uganda’s foreign policy engagement in the region, particularly in relations with Burundi, Rwanda, and other members of the East African Community.

Analysts say Ayebare’s extensive experience in multilateral diplomacy, including at the United Nations, positions him to advance Uganda’s strategic interests on peace, security cooperation, and economic integration.

His past involvement in mediation initiatives across the Great Lakes region is seen as an asset in managing sensitive regional dynamics.

The congratulatory message from Bujumbura signals continued diplomatic warmth and mutual recognition between the two neighbouring states at a time of evolving regional security and economic priorities.
