A fresh standoff has emerged in Uganda’s legal and political circles after lawyer Grace Munduru publicly criticised General Muhoozi Kainerugaba over remarks targeting advocate Caleb Alaka.

The dispute follows a series of posts on X in which Muhoozi threatened to arrest Alaka, a member of the legal team representing former Speaker Anita Among, who is under investigation over corruption allegations.

In a strongly worded statement, Munduru questioned the legality of the threats and warned against interfering with the work of legal professionals.

“I may want AAA to face the consequences of her actions, but not unlawfully!” she said. “Why would you want to threaten Counsel Caleb Alaka our gallant son of West Nile? The one who was pivotal in Garamba and Bidibidi? Whose ancestors walked so you can run? Get your hands off Caleb! Let him do his job, he is doing so lawfully!”

Muhoozi’s posts came amid an ongoing anti-corruption crackdown that has seen increased scrutiny on senior public officials.

In recent days, he has used his social media platforms to signal a tougher stance, warning that those implicated would face consequences.

However, his direct remarks against a practicing lawyer have drawn concern within sections of the legal fraternity, with critics arguing that such statements risk undermining due process and the independence of the bar.

Alaka has been part of the legal team involved in challenging security operations linked to investigations into Among. Authorities have carried out searches at properties associated with the former Speaker as part of the ongoing probe.

Munduru’s defence of Alaka also highlighted his professional standing and regional roots, framing the issue as one of both legal principle and respect for individual rights.

The exchange adds to growing scrutiny over the role of security actors in legal and political matters, particularly when public statements appear to target individuals involved in ongoing cases.

Muhoozi, who has in the past drawn criticism for his outspoken social media posts, has not issued a formal clarification on the remarks.

The incident is likely to intensify debate over the boundaries between security authority and the rule of law, especially in cases involving high-profile political figures
