A moment of kindness involving Ugandan media personality Sheilah Gashumba has sparked widespread online discussion after she revealed details of how she assisted a man selling grasshoppers to raise school fees for his children.
The conversation began after an X user reacted to a video showing Gashumba interacting with the hawker, expressing admiration for her gesture and humility.
The user wrote:
“Hey Sheilah Gashumba just watched some video of you interacting with a hawker who was selling Grasshoppers.
You have just inspired me to be grateful, humble and kind.
You effortlessly offered to pay for his children school fees man. I don’t know but felt so touched may God bless you. Men really go through a lot man.”
In response, Gashumba offered a detailed explanation of what transpired during the encounter, shedding light on the man’s circumstances and what motivated her decision to step in.
According to her, the man presented himself in a surprising manner despite his work.
“The man was wearing like an office manager, all smart and clean but hawking grasshoppers!” she said.
She explained that the man told her he personally prepares the traditional delicacy before selling it in Mukono, noting that restrictions on hawking in the city center had forced him to operate outside Kampala.
“He said he cooks the grasshoppers himself and sells them in Mukono because hawkers aren’t allowed in city center anymore,” Gashumba stated.
She further revealed the daily struggle behind his trade, including long-distance travel costs and financial pressure at home.
“He takes a boda from Nsambya everyday to Mukono!! He mentioned he has a 250,000ugx balance on his kids school fees from last term!!”
Moved by the story, Gashumba said she decided to directly intervene by clearing the outstanding school fees.
“I was touched so I offered to pay the balance straight to the school’s bank account,” she said.
She also shared personal details about the man’s family, noting that his children are studying in rural western Uganda.
“The kids study in Rukungiri and stay with the mum in the village! Bless them!”
The media personality used the moment to encourage more acts of generosity, especially towards struggling families.
“Let’s share the little we have with those who need the money most,” she added.
