A group of concerned Ugandans has formally petitioned the Inspectorate of Government seeking an investigation into the wealth of former Speaker Anita Annet Among, in a move that escalates scrutiny at a critical moment in the race for Speaker of the 12th Parliament.
The petition, dated May 13, 2026, and addressed to Inspector General of Government Aisha Batala Naluze, alleges possible breach of the Leadership Code Act.
The complainants accuse Among of failing to fully declare her income, assets, and liabilities as required under Ugandan law.
“We accordingly lodge this complaint regarding failure to declare and/or under-declaration of wealth,” the letter reads in part, adding that the IGG has the legal mandate to investigate and adjudicate the matter.
Under Section 4 of the Leadership Code Act, public officials are required to submit declarations of their wealth every two years.
The petitioners argue that failure to comply attracts penalties, including dismissal from office and forfeiture of undeclared assets.
The group, identifying themselves as citizens and taxpayers, further requested the IGG to provide access to Among’s declaration records, if any, under Section 22 of the law.
They also expressed willingness to support investigations to ensure accountability.
The development comes amid heightened political activity in Uganda, as lawmakers prepare for the nomination of the next Speaker of Parliament.
Among, who has been a central figure in recent parliamentary leadership, is widely viewed as a key contender, making the timing of the petition politically significant.
The controversy surrounding her wealth is not new. In recent months, questions have been raised both locally and internationally regarding her assets and financial disclosures.
However, Among has consistently denied wrongdoing and previously stated that she has complied with legal requirements, including submitting her wealth declarations to the relevant authorities.
