Security forces on Saturday evening allowed a legal team representing former Speaker of Parliament Anita Among access to her Nakasero residence in Kampala, where a CID-led search was ongoing in connection with a corruption probe into alleged illicit enrichment and money laundering.
The legal team, led by Counsel Caleb Alaka, arrived at the residence while joint security agencies maintained a tight cordon around the property.
The lawyers were later permitted entry through a side gate as investigators continued with the search inside the home.
The operation, which began earlier in the day, is reported to involve officers from the Criminal Investigations Directorate supported by other security units. Authorities are said to be searching for documents, electronic devices and other materials linked to the ongoing investigations.
Tension around the residence briefly escalated earlier in the evening when a fire brigade truck arrived at the scene.
More than six personnel in firefighting uniforms were seen disembarking from the vehicle while carrying what appeared to be specialised entry equipment.
Their deployment added to speculation over the scope and nature of the ongoing operation, although officials had not publicly clarified their role.
Despite the heightened security presence, the situation at the residence remained largely calm by 7:12pm.
At least four security drones were observed in the area, alongside five other police vehicles stationed around the perimeter.
Detectives remained on high alert as movement in and out of the compound was tightly controlled.
The search comes amid mounting scrutiny over allegations tied to financial conduct involving Among, who has previously faced questions regarding her wealth declarations.
The current probe is linked to claims of illicit enrichment and money laundering, allegations she has consistently denied in past related accusations.
The development has also unfolded against a backdrop of political uncertainty within Uganda’s parliamentary leadership structure, adding further attention to the operation.
Inside the residence, the presence of legal counsel marked a significant moment in the evening’s proceedings, as investigators continued their work under close coordination with deployed security units.
It remains unclear how long the search will continue or whether any materials have been officially seized.
By nightfall, the operation was still ongoing, with security personnel maintaining a strict perimeter and restricting access to the residence as the investigation progressed.
