State Minister for Youth and Children Affairs, Balaam Ateenyi, has weighed in on the ongoing investigation into a shooting incident involving a female motorist and a member of Speaker Anita Among’s security detail, commending the Speaker’s response and support for the victim.
The incident, which occurred in Kampala, has triggered public concern after reports emerged that a security officer attached to the Speaker allegedly shot a female motorist under unclear circumstances.
The officer has since been taken into custody as police continue investigations into the matter.
In a statement shared on Friday, Balaam praised Speaker Among for what he described as a compassionate and responsible approach in handling the situation, particularly her direct engagement with the victim’s family and commitment to medical support.
“I wish to thank Rt. Hon. Anita Among for her compassionate support toward the victim of yesterday’s shooting incident,” Balaam said.
“She has confirmed her commitment to ensure the victim receives full care until complete recovery and will pay the bills.”
He further noted that Speaker Among had also condemned the conduct of the officer involved, describing the act as reckless and unacceptable, while supporting ongoing investigations by security agencies.
“She has also rightly condemned the recklessness and actions of a member of her security detail, as investigations into the incident continue,” he added. “We wish the injured Ugandan a swift and full recovery.”
According to earlier briefings from the Speaker’s office, Among was informed of the incident after returning to Kampala and immediately reached out to the victim’s family to express concern and offer support.
Authorities have confirmed that the officer involved has been handed over to relevant security agencies for further investigation.
Police have stated that inquiries are ongoing to establish the exact circumstances that led to the shooting, including whether proper protocol was followed by the security detail.
