Kitgum District Woman Representative Lilian Aber has thrown her weight behind Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s endorsement of Defence Minister Jacob Oboth-Oboth for the Speaker of Parliament position, signalling early political alignment within sections of the ruling establishment.
Her remarks come amid growing debate following Muhoozi’s public declaration backing Oboth-Oboth to replace current Speaker Anita Among in the 2026–2031 parliamentary term.
In a statement reacting to the development, Aber expressed firm support for Muhoozi’s position and suggested that legislators aligned to the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) and the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) would follow suit.
“Congratulations Hon. Oboth Oboth. All the NRM/PLU MPs will vote for the candidate you have endorsed!” she said.
Aber went further to frame the endorsement within broader political loyalty to Muhoozi, whom she referred to as a future national leader.
“We believe in your decisions, our next president Muhoozi Kainerugaba,” she added.
Her comments mark one of the clearest indications yet of emerging blocs within the ruling circles coalescing around potential candidates for key parliamentary leadership positions ahead of the next general elections.
Oboth-Oboth, a seasoned lawyer and legislator representing West Budama County South, currently serves as Minister of Defence and Veteran Affairs.
He previously chaired Parliament’s Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee and has built a profile within both legal and legislative spheres since entering elective politics in 2011.
Gen. Muhoozi’s earlier remarks described Oboth-Oboth as the “best Minister” in government over the past five years, while also asserting that a decision on the next Speaker had already been made.
His statements, including controversial assertions about leadership and warnings against dissent, have drawn mixed reactions across political and civil spaces.
