Muhoozi Signals Crackdown on Among’s Expensive Rolls-Royce as Speakership Race Takes New Twist

Uganda’s political landscape has taken a sharper turn after General Muhoozi Kainerugaba hinted at possible action against Speaker Anita Among’s controversial Rolls-Royce, deepening divisions within the ruling establishment ahead of the 2026 parliamentary leadership race.

In a brief but pointed post on X, Muhoozi wrote: “All ‘stock mpya’ will be impounded by URA!”—a statement widely interpreted as a veiled reference to Among’s recently acquired luxury vehicle.

The remark has triggered fresh debate over the legality and optics surrounding the high-end car, which has already drawn public scrutiny over its importation and tax compliance.

The Rolls-Royce saga first gained attention after reports emerged that the vehicle, estimated to cost billions of Ugandan shillings, had attracted a disputed tax arrangement.

Initial claims suggested that only a small fraction of the tax had been paid, prompting backlash from sections of the public and political class.

The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) later clarified that the total tax obligation stood at over Shs1 billion, with the reported Shs100 million being an initial instalment under a structured payment plan.

However, the issue has since evolved beyond tax technicalities into a broader political flashpoint.

Critics argue that the controversy reflects deeper concerns about accountability and the conduct of senior public officials, especially in the context of existing international sanctions linked to corruption allegations.

Muhoozi’s latest remarks come just days after he formally withdrew support for Among’s anticipated bid to retain the speakership.

His political outfit, the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), had initially endorsed Among and her deputy Thomas Tayebwa.

That endorsement was abruptly revoked, with PLU directing its legislators to align with President Yoweri Museveni’s eventual choice.

The shift marked a significant recalibration of alliances within the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), with Muhoozi emerging as a central voice in shaping the succession debate.

His subsequent endorsement of Defence Minister Jacob Oboth Oboth for Speaker further underscored the break with Among.

Describing Oboth Oboth as “the best Minister in our government for the past five years,” Muhoozi positioned him as a credible and preferred candidate for the top parliamentary role in the next term.

The endorsement has added momentum to Oboth Oboth’s profile, while simultaneously isolating Among within sections of the political establishment.
