Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has defended his decision not to contest a parliamentary seat in the last general election, saying his focus is on national transformation rather than holding political office.

In remarks outlining the position of the Patriotic League Uganda (PLU), Muhoozi said the movement is not driven by the search for government jobs.

He described PLU as an initiative aimed at changing the country’s direction and improving the lives of citizens.

“In PLU, we do not look for government jobs. Our primary interest is the transformation of our country and people,” he said.

Muhoozi explained that his decision to stay out of Parliament was also influenced by concerns over public spending. According to him, taking up a legislative role would mean drawing additional resources from taxpayers.

“I refused to join Parliament so that I do not take more money from the people of Uganda,” he stated.

He added that he has been channeling his allowances as CDF towards supporting citizens, presenting the move as part of his commitment to public service.

However, he did not provide details on how the funds have been used.

At the same time, Muhoozi criticised individuals who pursue political positions for personal gain, saying such ambitions go against the values of PLU.

“All those who are interested in jobs and positions have not understood the gospel of PLU,” he said.

His remarks come amid growing visibility of PLU in Uganda’s political space, with the movement drawing interest, particularly among younger supporters.

The statements also place Muhoozi at the centre of ongoing discussions about leadership and governance in the country.
