President Yoweri Museveni has praised Uganda’s recently concluded general elections, describing the process as largely successful while urging political actors to uphold discipline and respect electoral laws.

In a statement issued shortly after his swearing-in, Museveni congratulated Ugandans for participating in a series of elections held since January 15, 2026.

The polls covered multiple positions, including the presidency, Members of Parliament, district chairpersons, councillors, and sub-county leaders.

“Congratulations on the series of elections that we have been having… These were the Presidential, the Parliamentary, District Chairpersons, District Councillors, Sub-County Chairpersons and Sub-County Councillors,” Museveni said.

The president singled out the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) for what he termed a decisive victory across the various electoral levels.

He credited the party’s performance to widespread support among voters, noting that it secured “big majorities” in the elections.

Museveni also acknowledged the participation of opposition parties, including the Democratic Party (DP) and the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC), commending them for engaging in the electoral process without violence.

“I also congratulate the other parties such as the DP, UPC, etc., that participated in the elections without using violence,” he said.

However, the president criticized the National Unity Platform (NUP) and sections of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), accusing them of engaging in violent conduct during the election period.

He did not provide specific incidents but emphasized the need for all political players to adhere to established electoral guidelines.

Museveni further called on parties operating under the Inter-Party Organisation for Dialogue (IPOD) framework to take a more active role in regulating political conduct during elections.

He urged them to outline clear rules governing campaign behavior and election management in line with Uganda’s constitution and laws.

“The parties under IPOD should clearly lay out agreed guidelines on the dos and don’ts of election management,” Museveni stated.
