Honourable Oboth Oboth has been elected Speaker of Uganda’s 12th Parliament following a decisive vote during the first sitting of Members of Parliament held Monday at the Kololo Ceremonial Independence Grounds.

The announcement was made by Chief Justice Dr Flavian Zeija, who presided over the election process.

Oboth, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) MP for West Budama Central County, secured an overwhelming 441 votes, defeating his closest challenger Paul Mwiru, who garnered 60 votes.

Democratic Party leader Norbert Mao trailed with 15 votes.

The results signal a strong consolidation of support within the ruling NRM and among allied legislators, giving Oboth a commanding mandate as he takes over leadership of the House.

His election comes at a time when Parliament is expected to handle critical legislative business, including budget approvals and key policy debates.

In his acceptance, Oboth is expected to emphasize unity and efficiency in parliamentary proceedings, as well as adherence to constitutional mandates.

His leadership will be closely watched, particularly in managing debate, maintaining order, and balancing government and opposition interests in the House.

The election process, conducted in line with parliamentary procedures, marked the formal commencement of the 12th Parliament’s activities.

It also set the tone for the distribution of power within the legislature, with the Speaker playing a central role in shaping parliamentary agenda and oversight functions.

Paul Mwiru, who finished second, had positioned himself as a reform-oriented candidate, while Norbert Mao’s participation added a competitive edge to the race, despite his significantly lower vote count.
