“Roll Up to Parliament in a Toyota Probox”: Veteran Journalist Issues Message to Embattled Speaker Anita Among

Veteran journalist Charles Onyango-Obbo has weighed in on the growing controversy surrounding Uganda’s former Speaker Anita Among, proposing a symbolic shift in public posture as scrutiny over her wealth intensifies.

In a pointed remark, Onyango-Obbo suggested that Among abandon displays of affluence and instead adopt a more modest public image to manage the unfolding crisis.

“If I were Uganda’s disgraced former Speaker, Anita Among, I would leave my remaining Mercedes-Benz gathering dust in the garage and roll up to Parliament in a humble Toyota Probox,” he said.

His comments come at a time when Among is under active investigation by Ugandan authorities over allegations of corruption, illicit enrichment and possible money laundering.

Security agencies have already conducted high-profile raids on her residences in Nakasero and Munyonyo-Kigo, sealing them as part of ongoing inquiries into her financial dealings and asset acquisitions.

The investigations have extended beyond her private homes to key parliamentary offices, including the Clerk’s office, the Directorate of Finance, and the external auditor’s office.

Detectives are reportedly tracing financial flows and procurement processes to establish whether public funds were misappropriated during her tenure.

Among’s troubles are further compounded by international sanctions. Both the United Kingdom and the United States imposed travel bans and asset freezes on her in 2024, linking her to corruption-related activities, including the controversial Karamoja iron sheets scandal.

These sanctions have continued to cast a shadow over her political standing and international reputation.

Against this backdrop, Onyango-Obbo’s remarks highlight the role of optics in political survival.

He argued that a dramatic shift in lifestyle—such as using a modest vehicle—could dominate public discourse and temporarily reshape narratives around her.

“The sheer spectacle would spark pandemonium, set every tongue wagging, and dominate conversations for yet another two weeks,” he added.

His analysis underscores a broader reality in East African politics, where public perception often evolves alongside legal and institutional processes.

While investigations focus on evidence and accountability, political figures frequently navigate parallel battles in the court of public opinion.

It remains unclear how Among will respond to both the legal pressure and the growing commentary from influential voices.

For now, her case continues to draw attention across Uganda and the wider region, reflecting ongoing concerns about governance, accountability, and the accumulation of wealth by public officials.
