"Police at Kira Division have successfully recovered a three-month-old baby boy who had been reported stolen in Kireka D Cell, Kireka Ward, Namugongo Division, Kira Municipality, Wakiso District."
Investigations show that the suspect, identified as Amongin Brenda, had travelled from Kalaki District and visited her cousin, Akunyo Sarah, on 4 May 2026, claiming she needed help to process her National ID under express service.
The disappearance was discovered shortly after the mother stepped out briefly, leaving the infant asleep in the house.
On returning, she found both the baby and the suspect missing, prompting an immediate report to police.
Police later established that the suspect had left the area soon after the incident, triggering coordinated intelligence-led tracking operations that led officers to Soroti District, where she was arrested and the infant safely recovered.
Preliminary inquiries indicate the suspect allegedly deceived her husband into believing she was pregnant, and reportedly requested money on 2 May, claiming she needed hospital delivery preparations.
"The stolen baby was safely recovered following coordinated efforts by police, and the suspect was apprehended in Soroti District."
Police confirmed the suspect is in custody and will face charges of child theft and obtaining money by false pretences.
The baby has been placed under protective care as arrangements continue for reunification with his family in Wakiso District.
