Kasambya County Member of Parliament and Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) Secretary General Daudi Kabanda has publicly conveyed President Yoweri Museveni’s endorsement of Hon. Oboth Oboth for the position of Speaker of Parliament, setting the stage for what appears to be a consolidated push within the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) ahead of future parliamentary leadership transitions.

Speaking on Saturday during a thanksgiving ceremony held at Oboth Oboth’s home in Mukono, Kabanda described the legislator as a disciplined and patient figure within the party ranks, hinting at a long-term grooming process for the top parliamentary seat.

“This is our next Speaker. He has been loyal and patient for some time,” Kabanda told the gathering, drawing applause from attendees, many of whom were newly elected NRM Members of Parliament.

Kabanda further referenced internal party dynamics dating back to 2021, noting that Oboth Oboth had previously shown interest in the speakership but stepped down after what he described as a direct appeal from President Museveni.

“In 2021, he intended to contest for the speakership but stepped down following a request from President Museveni,” Kabanda said, framing the decision as a demonstration of loyalty and party discipline.

The event attracted hundreds of newly elected MPs affiliated with the NRM, signaling early alignment within the ruling party’s parliamentary caucus ahead of key leadership decisions expected in the next Parliament cycle.

The strong turnout was interpreted by observers as a show of force and unity around Oboth’s potential candidacy.

Kabanda used the platform to rally both the party’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) and parliamentary caucus members, urging them to consolidate support behind Oboth should the President formally present his name for the speakership position.

“I appeal to members of the Central Executive Committee (CEC) and Members of Parliament that when President Museveni presents the name of Oboth Oboth, it should be unanimously supported,” he said. “As the caucus, we shall fully endorse him.”
