A nurse working in the United States has shared a deeply personal experience that ended in tears after she was labelled “aggressive” during a workplace meeting, triggering wider debate on how Black professionals are perceived in global work environments.
Judy Nyakerario, who serves as a team lead in a US healthcare facility, says the incident occurred during a meeting focused on budget concerns.
The team was reportedly running a deficit of about $50,000, prompting discussions on possible cost-cutting measures.
During the session, Nyakerario says she предложed reducing catering expenses, describing them as unnecessary.
“We need to cut the catering for the meetings. It’s wasteful. The numbers don’t lie,” she told colleagues.
However, she says the response from her supervisor caught her off guard.
“Whoa, Judy. That was a little… aggressive. Let’s all take a breath,” the manager allegedly said, effectively shifting the tone of the meeting.
According to Nyakerario, the comment did not sit well with her, particularly because she believed her input was factual and solution-oriented.
The situation became more difficult, she says, after witnessing a different reaction to a similar suggestion made by a colleague.
In a separate discussion, a younger employee reportedly raised the same concern about catering costs but was instead praised.
“She said the budget was too high and should be cut, and the manager commended her for being assertive,” Nyakerario explained.
The contrast, she says, highlighted what she views as unequal standards in how workplace communication is interpreted.
Overwhelmed by the experience, Nyakerario says she stepped away during her lunch break and broke down.
“It wasn’t about the numbers. It was about how I was perceived,” she noted.
Nyakerario says the episode forced her to reflect on how workplace labels can influence confidence, growth, and professional relationships.
She adds that she has since taken steps to protect herself, including documenting interactions and becoming more intentional about how feedback is addressed.
At the same time, she says she is determined not to withdraw from speaking up when necessary.
