State Minister for Youth and Children Affairs Balaam Ateenyi has urged Ugandans to remain alert following reports of a hantavirus outbreak involving passengers from an international cruise ship currently receiving treatment in the United States.

Ateenyi warned that the situation should be closely monitored as health authorities continue to respond to emerging cases linked to the MV Hondius cruise ship.

“Let us remain alert and aware as a new deadly virus continues to spread across parts of the world,” he said.

Reports indicate that one passenger linked to the outbreak and currently being treated in Atlanta has started showing symptoms consistent with hantavirus infection.

Another passenger admitted to Emory University Hospital remains under close observation but has not yet developed symptoms.

Emory University Hospital confirmed that both individuals were transferred for specialized care after arriving from the cruise ship where the outbreak was first detected at sea.

In its statement, the hospital noted: “Both patients arrived from the MV Hondius following the outbreak at sea. One is now symptomatic and receiving treatment, while the other remains under close monitoring as a confirmed contact.”

Health experts describe hantavirus as a rare but serious viral illness, often associated with exposure to infected rodents or contaminated environments.

In severe cases, it can cause respiratory complications and lead to death if not treated early.

Although no cases have been reported in Uganda, the minister said global travel increases the risk of exposure to emerging infections.

“This is a reminder that diseases do not respect borders. We must all stay informed and cautious, especially those travelling internationally,” Ateenyi added.
